Bringing Your Own Board

If you already have a favourite board, we absolutely encourage you to bring it.

Many guests travel successfully with airlines including Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and AirAsia, particularly with boards under 9’6.

For those bringing their own equipment, our onboard SUNOVA fleet remains available as backup should anything become damaged during the trip.

Terms and Conditions for Free Use of SUNOVA SUPs

Board Bond and Allocation

  • A $100 USD board bond deposit is required, refundable at the end of the tour if the board is returned undamaged.
  • If you bring your own board, our boards cannot be allocated as backups or for sole use. However, unallocated boards will be available for use or demo throughout the tour.

Board Usage and Availability

  • Boards are subject to availability and may change without notice.
  • Once allocated, the board will be yours for the entire trip. You may allow others to use it or swap boards, but you are fully responsible for the board throughout the tour.
  • Treat the allocated board as your own and take care of it accordingly.

Board Damage Responsibility

  • Inspect your board before use. If you notice any pre-existing damage, inform a Moon Tours representative immediately. If damage is found after use, The hirer is always responsible for the board for repair costs.

Repair Costs and Damage Policies

  • Minor repairs during the trip will incur a minimum fee of $100 USD.
  • If major repairs are required the minimum charge will be $200 USD.
  • If the board is creased or snapped, it will be considered a write-off, and the allocated surfer will be responsible for paying the full second-hand market value of the board.

Responsibility for Damaged Boards

  • The board is your responsibility for the entire tour, regardless of who uses it.
  • If someone else damages your allocated board, you are still responsible for repair costs. It will be your choice to seek compensation from third parties if you believe they were at fault.
  • Professional repairs are not always available in the Maldives. If minor damage occurs, we may perform temporary patchwork to keep you on the water, but this does not qualify as a professional repair.

These terms ensure the best experience for all surfers on the tour, helping us maintain our fleet and keep the stakes high throughout the journey. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Waves and Seasons in the Maldives 🌊🏄‍♂️

Surfing in the Maldives has exploded in popularity in recent years, drawing surfers from around the world. The same powerful swells that light up Indonesia also make their way to the Maldives, though the waves here tend to be a bit more mellow due to the higher latitude and SE exposure. The Maldives is rapidly becoming a surfing hot spot, but with the right knowledge and guidance, you can still find yourself surfing empty lineups with just you and your mates—a rare and unforgettable experience.

The Three Main Surf Zones

1. North and South Malé Atoll

  • Surf Season: April to October (South-West Monsoons)
  • Prime Swell Window: May to August (2 to 8 ft waves)

The North Malé Atoll is the busiest surf zone in the Maldives. With a rise in land-based hostels and resorts catering to surfers, along with many boat charters focusing on this region, it’s not unusual to find 50 or more surfers on a single wave. North Malé is ideal for budget-conscious travellers and swell chasers alike. When the swell is small, North Malé can still deliver, acting as a swell magnet. But when the swell cranks, North Malé transforms into a playground of deep barrels and intense reef breaks, with heavy hold-downs that demand respect.

South Malé offers a quieter option as you journey further south, with fewer crowds but still great waves to explore.

 

2. Central and Southern Central Atolls

  • Best Time to Surf: April to October (Southern Hemisphere winter)
  • Wave Size: 2 to 8 ft

This is our primary playground, where we focus most of our time. The waves in the Central and Southern Central Atolls are clean, long, and incredibly consistent. Throughout the southern winter, it’s rarely flat, with endless waves breaking across all wind and swell directions.

We can’t reveal the exact wave names here, but trust us—this region is loaded with gems. The key to scoring these waves is boat access. With many of these breaks only reachable by water, you’ll often find yourself surfing empty lineups, a dream for any SUP enthusiast.

 

3. Deep South / Southern Atolls

  • Best Time to Surf: February to April and September to November
  • Waves: Always present, but fewer options for SUP

The Southern Atolls at the very bottom of the Maldives offer a more remote surf experience, though they come with challenges. While waves are present year-round, the winds can get strong outside of the prime windows. For SUP surfers, getting to these atolls isn’t easy, as local flights don’t accommodate SUP boards, and the wave conditions aren’t ideal for paddle surfing.

But no worries—there’s no need to venture that far south! The Central Atolls offer more SUP-friendly waves, along with plenty of variety to keep you stoked for the entire trip.

7 Nights – 8 Days vs. 10 Nights – 11 Days

SUP Surf Adventure 🌊🏄‍♂️

Day One – Arrival Day ✈️🚤

Upon your arrival in the Maldives, you’ll be greeted by a representative from Adora or Moon Tours right outside the international arrivals area. If you arrive the day before, there won’t be a representative meeting you, but we’ll guide you on your next steps.

At 10:00 am, we’ll gather at Malé Airport, right in front of Coffee Club / Burger King—it’s a small airport, so we’ll be easy to spot! From there, you’ll board the Adora to begin your adventure.

⚠️ Important: If you can’t arrive before 12:30 pm on Day One, you’ll need to arrive the day before and overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé. You’ll also need to arrange your own transfer to and from the airport, but we’re happy to assist. Check out our FAQs for recommended accommodation options.

Typical 8-Day Tour 🗓️

On this itinerary, we typically explore the Meemu Atoll. if the conditions call for it. This route includes some of our favourite waves—perfect for those on a tighter schedule but still looking for an incredible experience.

Typical 11-Day Tour 🌊

With extra days, we have the chance to venture further south and stay longer at each spot, giving you more time to surf and explore. If the conditions align, we’ll cruise as far as Laamu Atoll, maximising your wave count and delivering the best possible experience.

What to Expect on Your SUP Surf Adventure 🏄‍♀️🚤

Our SUP surf trips start and end in Malé Harbour, close to some of the nation’s most famous waves in the North Malé Atoll. However, since these waves are often crowded with surfers from land-based resorts, hostels, and other charters, we typically avoid this area. Expect names like Jailbreaks, Sultans, Cokes, Ninjas, Honky’s, and private resort waves like Pastor Point.

Instead, we focus on the central and southern central atolls, which offer fuller, uncrowded waves ideal for SUP surfers. These boat-only accessible breaks provide long, clean rides perfect for SUPs, with just the right amount of size to remain rippable on a foil. There are some heavier barrel waves in the region, but our priority is SUP-friendly surf—this trip is all about fun, smooth rides rather than heavy slams.

Flexibility is Key 🌬️⛵

We believe that a surf trip should be fluid—not locked into rigid schedules or distances. Our tours are built to flow with Mother Nature, following the best swell and wind conditions. We stay flexible right up to the last minute, adapting throughout the trip to get you on the best waves.

With a generous fuel and mileage allowance, we have the luxury to travel farther than most standard charters, taking you away from the crowds and into the heart of the best surf spots. Our outstanding boat, experienced crew, local surf guide, and Moon Tours representatives know the region inside out, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The Last Day – Departure 🛫

Currently, depending on the group, airport transfer is typically scheduled for around 9 a.m., based on the most common departing flight times. Occasionally, we can arrange a later transfer if it suits the majority of flights. If you’d prefer not to take the group transfer, there’s usually the option to stay on the boat for the day (for an additional charge) and arrange a private transfer later.

For safe flight scheduling, any flights departing after 1:00 pm will work perfectly. In some cases, a late checkout of the yacht might be available, giving you a bit more time to soak in the last moments of paradise.

If you’d like to catch an earlier flight, we can arrange a private speedboat transfer. This option costs approximately USD $200. Alternatively, a water taxi may be available for $50, depending on our final night’s location.

Adora Dive Equipment Rates

Fishing has long been the lifeblood of island nations, and the Maldives is no exception—widely regarded as one of the ‘fishiest’ places on the planet. While pelagic species are often the prime targets, the reefs and shallows are teeming with exciting game fish that will test your skills. Expect fierce encounters with Bonefish, Barracuda, Grouper, Snapper, and the king of fish, the Giant Trevally (GT)—for which heavy-duty gear is a must if you plan on hauling these beasts onto the boat.

Cruise the deep blue waters along the outer reefs, where Yellowfin Tuna, Dogtooth Tuna, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Sailfish, and Marlin roam. With the freedom to fish from all three boats and the enthusiastic support of our crew, anglers can fully embrace the thrill of fishing these bountiful waters. If you’re serious about your fishing game, bring a solid rod and plenty of your favourite lures—because out here, the big ones are waiting. 🎣🐟🌊

We have a couple of inflatable SUPs available for guests to use free of charge—perfect for a flat-water paddle, some exercise, or just fun off the back of the boat. 🏄‍♂️🌊

Please note: Inflatable SUPs in the Maldives take a beating. With the intense sun and heat, we’ve seen failures across multiple brands. While we aim to have them ready for your use, if they sustain damage and become unusable, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to repair them during the trip. We appreciate your understanding and will do our best to keep them available for as long as possible! ☀️🚤

Inhabited Local Islands 🌴🏃‍♂️

Step ashore and explore the charm of a local island with a relaxing walk or run. Most islands are small and easy to navigate, featuring sandy roads and tracks that can be circled in 20-30 minutes. Be sure to bring a water bottle and a few dollars, just in case you want to grab a snack or souvenir from a local store.

To respect the local Muslim culture, women should dress modestly, covering their shoulders and knees.

Uninhabited Islands 🏝️📚

Enjoy some downtime on a deserted, palm-fringed island, where you can stretch your legs with a beach stroll or run. Lay back in the sand with a good book, or do your part by collecting any plastic bottles that have washed ashore.

Adora offers fully air-conditioned lounges with large flat-screen TVs, as well as in-room TVs for your personal enjoyment. Each TV is connected to an onboard entertainment system, showcasing a variety of movies and music. We love arranging visits to local primary schools or kindergartens, offering a wonderful way to meet the community and immerse yourself in the friendly, happy culture of the Maldives. These visits are often a highlight, providing meaningful connections with teachers and children.

If you’d like to make a donation, the kids and teachers are always grateful for sporting equipment such as tennis rackets, soccer balls, crayons, and pencils.

We encourage guests to buy supplies locally, either from a nearby island or in Malé. Not only does this support local businesses, but it also saves you the hassle of carrying items from home. Small gestures like these go a long way in making a positive impact. 🏀✏️
