frequently asked questions
If you’ve gotten as far as investing in your own SUP board, and are reasonably confident, this tour will suit you. Being comfortable amongst the waves and catching them will mean you’re good to go.
Generally speaking, the Maldives offers the best option for non surfers. The boats are big, quite luxurious and the crew work well to keep non surfers as busy or relaxed as they like. Cocktails on the sundeck, flat water paddling, island walks, diving, snorkelling and fishing all available for non surfers.
A surfer is anyone who intends to surf regardless of their ability.
A non surfer is anyone not surfing in anyway but can partake in all other activities.
Maldives; non surfers sharing with a surfer enjoy discounted rates up to 50% of the surfing rate depending on trip. You can find these details in the RATES tab on each trip.
We aim to have professional coaching available on all our Maldives trips which will be indicated on the website.
Maldives; You can always bring your own board and a lot do. Especially surfers riding smaller boards and those who simply love their boards and know them well.
You also have the opportunity to leave your boards at home and use one of our SUNOVA SUP’s. Subject to availability we have 10 boards from 8’6 – 9’4 and are allocated on a first come, first serve basis.
In any case you will be required to bring your own paddles & leg ropes.
Every individual needs to check and confirm this with their airline of choice. Our guidance below is only based on our own experience.
From our own experience we have been flying with boards up to 9’6 without any issues travelling to the Maldives with Singapore Airlines and Air Asia.
You are never too old. Some of our most experienced, comfortable and smooth surfers are well into their 70’s. We have SUP surfing clients of all ages, from 30’s to late 70’s. If we had to put a number on our average client age, it would be between 50 and 65.
In the Maldives, we take up to 12 surfing guests. On some of our exclusive trips, we have a maximum of 10 surfing guests.
Something that sets SUP Surf Tours apart are the waves we go for. Unlike traditional surf trips advertising reef training and hollow, fast waves breaking onto reefs, we know what surfers want.
The size of waves we catch are in the hands of the surf gods. Generally, we see 3-5 foot waves, but we can’t pre-order what we will see on the day. What we can control is where and what we surf. The waves we often encounter generally break in deeper water, running off into deep channels or down alongside reefs. This offers an easy exit to reset for your next set. These waves generally tend to be fuller, as opposed to hollow, and offer long rides.
If you’re looking for double overhead tubes, we recommend booking a shortboard trip and bringing your SUP along. That said, in the same region—perhaps further along the reef, from a deeper takeoff spot, or on the opposite side of the channel—you can often find heavier, shortboard-style waves. While these waves are possible, they are not always guaranteed.
The Maldives offer spectacular scuba diving and snorkelling from onboard. Bonfires and beers on deserted islands are a must, alongside island walks and cultural experiences.
Relax and read a book above deck, enjoy cocktails, or exercise on the boats sundeck. Brilliant opportunities for reeling in a fresh catch often present themselves. Discuss fishing activities with our friendly staff at the time of your booking to learn more.
In the Maldives, some tours come with a private cabin by default, while for all other trips, you have the option to upgrade from a standard twin-share accommodation.
For other destinations, a private cabin is only available if you are willing to pay double the rate, covering the cost of two people.
Regardless of the trip, we always strive to match travelers with compatible roommates for a comfortable experience.
Our dedicated travel agent, Brett Leopold, handles all group flight arrangements.
