Paul Byrne based in Ireland, is a very experienced Stand up Paddle boarder and a life-long ocean enthusiast with a background in Surfing, Scuba Diving, Boating, and Fishing. All things Surf is his passion!!
Other sports participated regularly include Running, and Snowboarding. Paul is born and breed Irish but has travelled extensively. Paul’s philosophy is all about living ones life!
Paul is an ASI Master SUP Trainer,ย and an experienced educator, trainer and SUP paddler.ย ย He is a registered Physical Education Teacher in a Dublin private boyโs school, and has been involved in Education all his career. Before his involvement in Surf and SUP, he was very involved in the recreational Dive Industry, and is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
Paul owns and runs IRISHSUP, an ASI accredited SUP School, located at Dublin, Ireland, since 2010. Paul regularly competes in stand up paddle racing and SUP surfing competitions at local, national, and international level. He has represented Ireland at the last two World Championships, where he was also the Irish Team Manager.
Through his SUP school, Paul has delivered SUP lessons to 1000โs of clients from beginner to elite and advanced. Paul is very instrumental in the massive growth of SUP in Ireland.
Currently Paulโs passion has him working tirelessly on developing standards and rules for SUP competitions (racing and surf) at local and national level.

Limitations of Land-Based Surf Resorts ๐๏ธ
Surf resorts areย limited by location. For everything to alignโwind, swell, and tidesโluck needs to be on your side. Most resorts offer just one โprivateโ wave, and access to other waves requires a speedboat or Dhoni trip, often withย up to 30 surfersย on that same break. Terms and Conditions for Free Use of SUNOVA SUPs
Board Bond and Allocation
- Aย $100 USD board bond depositย is required, refundable at the end of the tour if the board is returned undamaged.
- If you bring your own board,ย our boards cannot be allocated as backups or for sole use. However,ย unallocated boardsย will be available for use or demo throughout the tour.
Board Usage and Availability
- Boards are subject to availabilityย and may change without notice.
- Once allocated, the board will beย yours for the entire trip. You may allow others to use it or swap boards, butย you are fully responsibleย for the board throughout the tour.
- Treat the allocated board asย your ownย and take care of it accordingly.
Board Damage Responsibility
- Inspect your board before use. If you notice any pre-existing damage,ย inform a Moon Tours representative immediately. If damage is found after use,ย The hirer is always responsible for the boardย for repair costs.
Repair Costs and Damage Policies
- Minor repairsย during the trip will incur aย minimum fee of $100 USD.
- Ifย major repairsย are required the minimum charge will beย $200 USD.
- If the board isย creased or snapped, it will be considered aย write-off,ย and the allocated surfer will be responsible for paying theย full second-hand market valueย of the board.
Responsibility for Damaged Boards
- The board isย your responsibility for the entire tour, regardless of who uses it.
- If someone else damages your allocated board,ย you are still responsibleย for repair costs. It will be your choice to seek compensation from third parties if you believe they were at fault.
- Professional repairs are not always available in the Maldives. If minor damage occurs, we may performย temporary patchworkย to keep you on the water, but this does not qualify as a professional repair.

Waves and Seasons in the Maldives ๐๐โโ๏ธ
Surfing in the Maldives has exploded in popularity in recent years, drawing surfers from around the world. The same powerful swells that light upย Indonesiaย also make their way to the Maldives, though the waves here tend to be a bit more mellow due to theย higher latitudeย andย SE exposure. The Maldives is rapidly becoming aย surfing hot spot, but with the right knowledge and guidance, you can still find yourselfย surfing empty lineups with just you and your matesโa rare and unforgettable experience.
The Three Main Surf Zones
1. North and South Malรฉ Atoll
- Surf Season:ย April to October (South-West Monsoons)
- Prime Swell Window:ย May to August (2 to 8 ft waves)
The North Malรฉ Atoll is theย busiest surf zoneย in the Maldives. With a rise inย land-based hostels and resortsย catering to surfers, along with many boat charters focusing on this region, itโs not unusual to findย 50 or more surfers on a single wave. North Malรฉ is ideal for budget-conscious travellers and swell chasers alike. When the swell is small, North Malรฉ can still deliver, acting as aย swell magnet. But when the swell cranks,ย North Malรฉ transforms into a playground of deep barrelsย and intense reef breaks, with heavy hold-downs that demand respect.
South Malรฉ offers a quieter option as you journey further south, with fewer crowds but still great waves to explore.

2. Central and Southern Central Atolls
- Best Time to Surf:ย April to October (Southern Hemisphere winter)
- Wave Size:ย 2 to 8 ft
This isย our primary playground, where we focus most of our time. The waves in the Central and Southern Central Atolls areย clean, long, and incredibly consistent. Throughout the southern winter, itโs rarelyย flat, with endless waves breaking across allย wind and swell directions.
We canโt reveal the exact wave names here, but trust usโthis region is loaded with gems. The key to scoring these waves isย boat access. With many of these breaks only reachable by water, youโll often find yourself surfingย empty lineups, a dream for any SUP enthusiast.

3. Deep South / Southern Atolls
- Best Time to Surf:ย February to April and September to November
- Waves:ย Always present, but fewer options for SUP
Theย Southern Atollsย at the very bottom of the Maldives offer a more remote surf experience, though they come with challenges. While waves are present year-round, theย winds can get strongย outside of the prime windows. For SUP surfers, getting to these atolls isnโt easy, asย local flights donโt accommodate SUP boards, and the wave conditions arenโt ideal for paddle surfing.
But no worriesโthereโs no need to venture that far south! Theย Central Atolls offer more SUP-friendly waves, along withย plenty of varietyย to keep you stoked for the entire trip.

Upon your arrival in the Maldives, youโll beย greeted by a representative from Adora or Moon Toursย right outside the international arrivals area. If you arrive the day before, there wonโt be a representative meeting you, but weโll guide you on your next steps.
Atย 10:00 am, weโll gather atย Malรฉ Airport, right in front ofย Coffee Club / Burger Kingโitโs a small airport, so weโll be easy to spot! From there, youโll board theย Adoraย to begin your adventure.
โ ๏ธย Important:ย If you canโt arrive beforeย 12:30 pmย on Day One, youโll need to arrive the day before andย overnight in Malรฉ or Hulhumalรฉ. On this itinerary, we typicallyย explore the Meemu Atoll.ย if the conditions call for it. This route includes some of ourย favourite wavesโperfect for those on a tighter schedule but still looking for an incredible experience.

Withย extra days, we have the chance toย venture further southย and stay longer at each spot, giving youย more time to surf and explore. If the conditions align, weโllย cruise as far as Laamu Atoll, maximising your wave count and delivering the best possible experience.
What to Expect on Your SUP Surf Adventureย ๐โโ๏ธ๐ค
Our SUP surf tripsย start and end in Malรฉ Harbour, close to some of theย nationโs most famous wavesย in theย North Malรฉ Atoll. However, since these waves are often crowded with surfers fromย land-based resorts, hostels, and other charters, we typically avoid this area. Expect names likeย Jailbreaks, Sultans, Cokes, Ninjas, Honkyโs, and private resort waves likeย Pastor Point.
Instead, weย focus on the central and southern central atolls, which offerย fuller, uncrowded wavesย ideal for SUP surfers. Theseย boat-only accessible breaksย provide long, clean rides perfect for SUPs, with just the right amount of size to remainย rippable on a foil. There are someย heavier barrel wavesย in the region, but ourย priority is SUP-friendly surfโthis trip is all aboutย fun, smooth ridesย rather than heavy slams.

The Last Day โ Departureย ๐ซ
Currently, depending on the group, airport transfer is typically scheduled for around 9 a.m., based on the most common departing flight times. Occasionally, we can arrange a later transfer if it suits the majority of flights. If youโd prefer not to take the group transfer, thereโs usually the option to stay on the boat for the day (for an additional charge) and arrange a private transfer later.
Forย safe flight scheduling, any flights departing afterย 1:00 pmย will work perfectly. In some cases, aย late checkout of the yachtย might be available, giving you a bit more time to soak in the last moments of paradise.
If youโd like toย catch an earlier flight, we can arrange aย private speedboat transfer. This option costs approximatelyย USD $200. Alternatively,ย a water taxiย may be available forย $50, depending on ourย final nightโs location.
